While the talk and slideshow was going on, we were served a dinner, a sampling of the foods of three of the Peruvian regions, complete with a very rich dessert. The meal (for those culinary connoisseurs) consisted of a dish of shrimp cooked by marinating in lime juice on salsa, a half sandwich containing egg, avocado, and tomato, a stew of rice with (I think) pork. I'm not sure of the dessert but looked to be a heavy egg custard with a very strong dark sauce. I tried it all but didn't finish anything. It was OK, but I am a picky eater.
What impressed me the most, other that the beautiful art and examples by the tribes, was the fact that these tribes of people only use plants to cure illnesses and it appears that it really works. Someone near me asked why they don't bring that stuff over here. The question has a very easy answer to me, I turned to Gretchen and said, "Money!" The drug companies run the medical profession as far as I'm concerned. Can you imagine if we could actually cure cancer with plants? Ha! Lots of unhappy millionaires. Never happen. The last thing Jeremiah said was something the Shamus said about his philosophy. I don't remember what it was exactly but it was to the effect that the way we live is destroying us and them too and statement gave me some scary nightmares last night.
Thanks Jeremiah for sharing your trip with us. I know it couldn't have been an easy feat but we did appreciate it. I will never get there, to Peru, but I was there last night with your help.
